Loot Crate Unboxing – July 2015

Hello readers, and welcome to another Loot Crate Unboxing!  This is the start of my second year subscribing to Loot Crate, and it starts off with their first sequel theme: Heroes 2.  Let’s see what we’ve got, shall we?

July 2015: Heroes 2
July 2015: Heroes 2

First up this month, a great mash up poster of Wonder Woman and the famous ‘We Can Do It’ poster from the World War II era.  The artwork is fantastic and a great style emulation of the old pin-up posters.  This will look great with my other Loot Crate posters above my computer desk.

Next, we have an awesome sweatband from Bioworld featuring a well-known symbol: The Tri-Force Eagle.  The stitching is very well done and looks to be very sturdy.  I imagine this would survive a lot of gym visits and washings… if I went to the gym.  Regardless, it’s quite comfortable.

Now we come to the first piece of loot tied to everyone’s favorite dark knight.  The Batman Multi-Tool Keychain is an item worthy of the utility belt itself.  The center is a bottle opener and each wing has a screwdriver head on it, with a Phillips on one and a flathead on the other.  I will be adding this to my keyring ASAP.

We have a hardcover book that is probably one of my favorite pieces of loot to date.  The League of Regrettable Superheroes is a most entertaining book.  It highlights some of the most ridiculous and crap-tastic superheroes of the Golden, Silver, and Modern Ages of comics.  You have to make an effort to read about some of these ‘superheroes’ at your earliest convenience.  You won’t be disappointed.

For our second piece of Dark Knight loot, we have a small statue from Quantum Mechanix of an Adam West-style Batman on a building gargoyle.  It’s a sizable statue, with very true-to-the-show colors.  This will make a great display piece in the nerd den (my living room).

We also have another game download for a game I’ve never heard of.  Brawlhalla, sounds like a game for the gods.  Just the name implies that it holds epic battles between various and sundry heroes (and possibly villains).  I will have to look into this game, that is likely popular, given it’s inclusion in this crate.

Lastly, we have a new air freshener for the car.  This time, a Star Trek theme, with Spock’s trademark hand gesture.  I find this tugs at my heart a little more, given Leonard Nimoy’s passing a few months back.  This is going in my car immediately, joining my MegaMan and Captain America, both of which have run out of scent at this point.

There we have it.  Another great box of stuff from the Loot Masters at Loot Crate.  What was your favorite piece of loot this month?  Mine was definitely the League of Regrettable Superheroes.  Tell me yours in the comments below!

A life is like a garden

As you should know by now, the legendary Leonard Nimoy passed away last week.  Like many of you, I was thoroughly shocked and profoundly sad upon hearing the news of his passing.  I’ve had a week now to come to terms with this loss, and find myself aching from it still.  Never before in my life have I felt the death of a celebrity as personally as I have Mr. Spock’s.  Several times last Friday, I found myself on the verge of tears and finally broke down that night as I was laying in bed watching the funeral scene from Wrath of Khan.  So, for the rest of this post, I will do my own little tribute to Mr. Nimoy, a man who truly did live long, and prosper.

Loot Crate Unboxing – September 2014

Hello all!  I’m back, and it’s time for another Loot Crate unboxing!  I realize I’m a little behind the 8 ball, but this is really the soonest I had the time (and energy) to get back to the blog.  So, without further adieu, the September Loot Crate!  This month’s theme: Galactic.

The great stuff in my September 2014 Loot Crate! Please ignore the cluttered computer desk in the background.
The great stuff in my September 2014 Loot Crate! Please ignore the cluttered computer desk in the background.

I’m going to start with the xenomorph and move in a clockwise-spiral through the picture.  So, the xenomorph.  One of the most terrifying alien species ever to grace the silver screen and haunt our nightmares.  This was actually one of the available figures available to Looters from ReAction Figures, so of course I ended up with the scariest one.  I’ll be honest.  I was actually afraid of the movie for a long time and would refuse to watch it.  I still need to watch it with all the lights on and caccooned securely in a blanket, but I do enjoy watching Alien from time to time.  I haven’t decided if I want to risk letting it out of the packaging…

Next, we have a Loot Crate exclusive Tribble from Qmx.  The packaging on this is lovely and quite amusing.  It includes warnings to “KEEP OUT OF REACH OF KLINGONS” and “DO NOT BLOCK VENTILATION GRILL”.  This little fuzzy guy is adorable, but I haven’t heard any squealing yet, so I’m probably going to leave him in there.  I’d rather not be eaten out of house and home.

Following the Tribble, we have a cool vinyl figure of Captain Tightpants himself! Malcolm Reynolds!  Another line from our friends at Funko, this box is usually a mystery sci-fi legend, and Captain Mal is usually holding his sidearm.  However, in the wonderful Loot Crate exclusive, he’s wielding his over-under double-barrel.  It’s a great Firefly treasure that any Brown Coat can appreciate (since we don’t get very many anymore).

We have a poster this month and it enshrines that fateful moment in Cloud City when Han and Leia kind of said ‘I love you’ for the first time.  It’s a fine piece of carbonite that will look good somewhere in my nerd den.  I just need a cargo hold to store him in…

Moving down to the Halo postcard, we have a digital download for a new run of Halo comics that follow the events of Halo 4 and the intrepid crew of the UNSC flagship Infinity.  It looks like it should be a good read, as many of the familiar faces of Halo 4’s Spartan Ops missions are seen.  There’s even a few of the old favorites.  I look forward to diving back into a world that’s been so prevalent in the lives of popular culture for the past decade and then some.

Then we come to another wonderful Firefly bit: money.  It seems that Looters have been gifted that which the fine crew of Serenity struggle so hard to find and keep.  Jayne Day would be long celebrated with this fat stack of cash.  On a personal note, I will probably add this to the Geek Supreme cosplay I have in mind, as well as my Jayne cosplay that will continue to develop.

Next we have something that every galactic traveler needs: cool snacks.  OK, so they’re just Pop Rocks.  That doesn’t diminish the fact that every Looter who ate bag after bag during their childhood isn’t filled with nostalgia.  And while it’s been proven that mixing them with soda won’t make your stomach explode, I can’t think of any soda that might go with apple flavored Pop Rocks.

Finally, we come to another fine mash up bit of swag.  For the third month in a row, Looters have been gifted a magnet.  If this keeps up, we’re likely to run out of space real fast.  This month’s magnet clearly looks like an early Star Wars arcade game crossed with the always classic Asteroids arcade.  The primary difference is, you’re a Star Destroyer looking for the Millennium Falcon in the Hoth asteroid field.

And that pretty much wraps it up for this month.  All in all, this was a pretty awesome crate.  It was also probably worth the most since I started my subscription.  I hope you all enjoyed your crates.  If you aren’t subscribed, I highly recommend it.

And to my regulars, I should have Weird Al Wednesdays back up and running this week.

Uber Geek Cosplay

One of the cosplay original ideas I have is to build an ‘uber geek’ that combines different aspects of multiple fandoms. To that end, I have amassed the following items:

1. Lightsaber – a ForceFX replica of Luke’s lightsaber from Return of the Jedi
2. Comm Badge – a magnet pin replica of a comm badge from Star Trek: The Next Generation
3. Sonic Screwdriver – a decent replica, with lights and sounds, of the Other Doctor’s sonic screwdriver from The Day of the Doctor
4. Wand – a replica of Harry Potter’s wand from the popular book and movie series
5. Colonial Military dog tags – replicas of Colonel Saul Tigh’s dog tags from Battlestar Galactica
5. Ultra Ball – a foam replica of an ultra ball from Pokemon.
6. Diamond Sword – a foam replica of from the popular Minecraft game
7. 4 Star Dragonball – an acrylic replica from one of the best anime shows of all time, Dragonball & Dragonball Z
8. Cap’s Shield – an aluminum replica of Captain America’s shield that I plan to modify slightly

Today, I purchased an addition to the costume: a Jayne hat, from the cult classic Firefly.  As you can see, I’m bridging quite the array of nerd cultures here. If you have any suggestions as to other items I could add to this, please let me know in the comments!

*I would like to say a few things about the links, and apologize for not having one for the Cap Shield.  For the most part, I got these items for about the same price as listed on the links.  Some of them even came from the exact link I’ve given above.  However, when I bought the Col Tigh dog tags, they were not nearly that expensive.

Hey, Listen!

I posted this ‘about me’ sort of thing over at Quaintjeremy’s Thoughts. I am starting as a contributor there and felt this an adequate way to verify my nerd credit.  Be sure to check out the the Thoughts for other great nerd postings!

My Editor-In-Chief has asked that I give you all a sort of “about me” blog entry.  Well, here it goes.

I’m 26 years old and have lived in Indiana all my life.  I have been married for nine months to my wonderful wife, who is pregnant with our first child!  Like the EIC, I attended Wabash College.  Unlike the EIC, I do not have a Bachelor of Arts in English.  My degree is in German.  I have never really had any idea what to do with it, as I was not an exceptional German student.  None the less, I have managed to survive pretty well so far.

My nerd credentials are somewhat extensive.  Star Wars was my first science fiction memory and love.  I couldn’t have been much older than 8 when I first saw A New Hope, in its original release edit.  We were over to dinner at…
